Jason answers our questions
What attracted you to computer science?
My attraction to computer science is linked to my passion for understanding how things, especially systems and applications, work. Technology today drives modern-day society, whether it’s business (online sales), healthcare (smart-health devices), or government (e.g. electronic voting). I am very excited about being in this space it’s the perfect opportunity to be at the cutting-edge of technology!
What area – technical problem or general theme – of computer science has been the most challenging?
My area of cyber security has been particularly challenging. This is because with every stride of progress in technology, there are hackers and other criminals bent on disrupting such technology, finding ways of stealing information or finances, and other nefarious activities. For security to be truly effective therefore, we need to be able to better understand and predict criminal behaviours, and create systems and services that are resilient to their attacks. This is what is my day job!
What – about social media – has surprised you most over the last few years?
I’ve been surprised by how significantly social media has spread, and has, for some people, taken over their lives. What surprises me most however is that people don’t seem to understand the risks of sharing too much information on social media and the impact that may have on their lives. There has already been instances of criminals using social media to discover when people are not at home, and thereby breaking into their houses. This is just the tip of the iceberg, there’s much more stuff that criminals are up to!
What advice would you give to your 20-something self?
Don’t post all those pictures of food! Or, more broadly, just be careful of what you post online. I think that I have been fortunate in avoiding this (especially in my use of @jasonnurse!), but there are many teenagers and 20-something year olds that may be posting too much personal information. This could really impact their futures, potentially in terms of job applications, but maybe even more widely.
What type of destination is your go-to to unwind / go off-grid?
Beaches of Barbados. Nothing can beat it! The Sun, Sea and Sand!
